Heat and Housing: Spotlight on SGV Casita

It's getting hot in here — and that's terrible news, especially if you're a tenant without access to air conditioning or the funds to pay an expensive utility bill. This isn't just for comfort; it's for survival. In this teach-in, hear from three alum of LA Forward's 2023 SGV Community Leadership in Affordable Housing cohort - Amanda Grant, Kiana Martinez, and Sarah Murray - who have started an initiative to investigate challenges (and policy solutions!) at the intersection of heat and housing in LA County. SGV Casita is a hub for housing organizers working to bring attention to extreme heat in housing issues. We want heat equity for every neighbor. Our mission is to ensure our neighbors in the San Gabriel Valley have the resources and support to withstand extreme heat, and to advocate for city infrastructure that adapts increasingly hot summers. We see extreme heat as the number one threat to our communities in the coming years, and pursue not only housing as healthcare, but also cooling as healthcare.

A majority of our budget comes from our members’ monthly donations. In 2024, our goal is to raise 70% of our budget from dues-paying members. That will enable us to be 100% accountable to people like you. Your gift allows us to respond rapidly to emerging issues, to take on powerful interests, and spend as little time possible on fundraising so we can focus on the crucial work that needs to get done every day.
